Media reporting and Irish Team Manager Position

It's been quite a while since my last posting, but I decided that I needed to take some time out and really observe the blogging community and the community that is out there - observing & commenting on things that matter to them.

The attention that sport gets in media today, particularly in light of Noam Chomsky's remarks on it being the opiate of the masses (not quote his quote) is astounding. In Ireland over the last few weeks, it has been the now vacant position of the Irish Soccer team manager. In my mind, the frenzy over who might take over this "poisoned chalice" given our recent humblings, has been created to a large part by radio and print media.

The various names that have been mentioned - Ferguson, Martin O'Neill - even George Burley - are absolutely ludicrous. This is blatant, empty, writing by journalists, with deadlines to reach and too little real copy. How much is the world of betting influencing this as well?

The whole Keano thing - of him being a contender for the job - in my mind, this could be more divisive in the minds of the passionate soccer fans as was the Saipan affair. In that incident, he was clearly thinking of himself, more than the team. He may be a fantastic player, but as an unproven man-manager, it would be a huge risk. anyway, he has proably had his cards marked already by the FAI.
